A glimpse: This weekend we celebrate the Transfiguration of our Lord, a feast of the Church celebrated on August 6. This is one of my favorite feast days. In the Gospels, Jesus mentions his future death to his disciples. Their reaction is what ours is like. Oh no! But then a week after stating this to the disciples he is transfigured before Peter, James and John, showing them and us what the eternal future will be like. Pure gift!
Fishing: Jesus called his disciples to be “fishers of men.” This week, however, I will be fishing for walleye and pike on Lake Oba in Canada. There isn’t phone or internet service up there, so I won’t be able to correspond with anyone. I will be back on Friday.
Tigers: The Tigers have fallen on tough times. It might take a few years for them to be competitive again. Nonetheless, some members of the Knights of Columbus and their families will be rooting them on this Saturday, August 12, as part of the Knights’ day with the Tigers.
Following are some events going on in our diocese:
Lansing Lugnuts Vocations Night
– Friday, August 11: There are plenty of tickets for purchase through the Knights of Columbus.
Rachel’s Vineyard Weekend
– August 11 – 13: Registration is open for our next Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat for anyone who has lost a child to abortion and is in need of hope and healing. Please tell a friend or family member about this retreat hosted in a supportive, confidential and non-judgmental environment. It is the beginning of a journey of restoration and renewal! The cost of the retreat is $200, but financial aid is readily available for any resident of the Diocese of Lansing. For more information contact Cecilia Tombelli, diocesan Director of Project Rachel Ministry, via e-mail to: ctombelli@corlansing.org or call 517-993-0291.
Bishop’s Priesthood Discernment Dinner
– Sunday, August 20: This is for young men who perhaps have thought about the priesthood. Fr. Dan is leading this endeavor.
Nun Run to the East Coast
– August 17-20: Unique opportunity to visit five great Orders, some active & contemplative ones. Contact the vocation office at 517.342.2504.
Be assured of my prayers while I am on my fishing trip.
